You don't have to look far for guidance

Over the past five years, it seems the world of Surface Pattern Design has exploded with hundreds of thousands of designers jumping on the pattern wagon. It’s easy to think then that it’s all been done before and is there actually any room for me! But you don’t have to look far to find plenty of inspiration from other designers who all experienced the same trepidation when starting out and now have a raft of resources, free education and tips and tricks available to help aspiring designers get on the pathway.

One such resource that I’ve found hugely valuable is Fleur & Ryan from Creative Studio Collective. I’ve been a subscriber to their Creative Briefs and Roundtable Interviews for the past 12 months. Finding another kiwi (New Zealander), who is as passionate about squares and circles as I am, has been a game changer.

If you are wanting to start out on your pattern journey and you are not ready to invest a large amount of money upfront, I would highly suggest looking into Creative Studio Collective. Their message is all about inclusion and sharing their skills with others. I’ve connected with some wonderful designers both in my own country and around the world who all have the same questions, reservations and hesitations that I have. It’s empowering to know you are not alone!
